To develop a website that will serve as an interface between local location, movement and sales of tree cuttings and other wood materials for processing into furniture, household goods, hardwood lumber and other by-products.
Project Number: 00-01-021
Funding Round: 1 (1999-2000)
Research Focus Area: Biodiversity
ARI Member Campus: California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo
Director: Thompson, Richard
Conduct a “biotic survey” of aquatic habitats of the central San Joaquin Valley to determine range of species of algae and cyanobacteria. Information gained will broaden understanding of the role of microorganisms in the process of “recycling” selenium.
Project Number: 00-02-045
Funding Round: 1 (1999-2000)
Research Focus Area: Biodiversity
ARI Member Campus: California State University, Fresno
Director: Zechman, Frederick
Evaluate the effects of timber harvesting in the Santa Cruz mountains of California over a five-year period. Researchers will analyze water quality in streams to determine how effectively harvesting practices protect local watersheds.
Project Number: 00-03-011
Funding Round: 1 (1999-2000)
Research Focus Area: Biodiversity

To assess the impact of high-intensity, short-duration (HISD) cattle grazing on natural rangeland, particularly on the oak/woodland savanna rangelands important to the California cattle industry. HISD and open grazing will be compared against no grazing to quantify effects on forage diversity, productivity and quality.
Project Number: 00-03-014
Funding Round: 1 (1999-2000)
Research Focus Area: Biodiversity
ARI Member Campus: California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo
Director: Hall, Michael
To develop protocols that will reduce exotic plant species' incasion into natural ecosystems in California coastal regions and elsewhere. Exotic plants are among the most significant threats to biodiversity and ecosystem stability.
Project Number: 00-03-015
Funding Round: 1 (1999-2000)
Research Focus Area: Biodiversity
ARI Member Campus: California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo
Director: Steinmaus, Scott
To continue monitoring hydrology and water quality in the Morro Bay Estuary, arguably the most important wetland system on the south central coast of California. The estuary and its watershed, representing a diverse biological and economic resource to the people of California, are impacted by various pollutants, with sediment being of particular concern.
Project Number: 00-03-026
Funding Round: 1 (1999-2000)
Research Focus Area: Biodiversity
ARI Member Campus: California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo
Director: Moody, Lynn
To show communities how to dispose of their urban forest prunings from trees and shrubs as woody biomass rather than using more traditional and costly disposal practices. Tree inventories and volume equations will be used to estimate biomass potential from several communities. Data will be used to explore market alternatives.
Project Number: 00-03-036
Funding Round: 1 (1999-2000)
Research Focus Area: Biodiversity
ARI Member Campus: California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo
Director: Pillsbury, Norman
To study the design and construction aspects of artificial wetlands and the parameters for optimum functionality. An additional component of this project will be technology transfer in the form of educational materials derived from the results, which will allow planners to use these techniques in other watersheds
Project Number: 00-03-057
Funding Round: 1 (1999-2000)
Research Focus Area: Biodiversity
ARI Member Campus: California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo
Director: Vilkitis, James
To investigate factors that are thought to be significant in successful establishment of native plants in riparian areas. These factors include irrigation management, browsing control, and weed control. Results could assist with more economical restoration of riparian lands.
Project Number: 00-05-009
Funding Round: 1 (1999-2000)
Research Focus Area: Biodiversity
ARI Member Campus: California State University, Chico
Director: Delwiche, Patricia A.
To provide a more comprehensive evaluation of the impact of salt, nitrates, and organic contaminants from food processing waste on soil, plants, and water. Information gained should aid in disposal
of waste materials without compromising soil, plant and water quality.
